Incels are members of an online culture who label themselves as unable to find a sexual partner despite wanting one (“Incels.co – Involuntary Celibate”, 2020). Discussions in incel meetings are often characterized by self-pity, resentment, racism, entitlement to sex, and the endorsement of violence against sexually active people.

Incels are mainly the male gender and are heterosexual and many sources report that incels are usually of the white race. Incels communities have been criticized by the media and for encouraging violence, spreading and radicalizing their members. Discussions often point out to the belief that men are entitled to sex. Other common views include idleness, loneliness, unhappiness, suicide sexual surrogates and prostitutes as well as other attributes they believe increase one’s desirability as a partner such as income or personality. Opposition to women’s rights is commonplace. Some posters blame women’s liberation for their inability to find a partner.

Incels believe that there was a time where looks played less of a role in finding romance and men’s entitlement to sex with women was never denied. Self-identified incels are mostly described as young and friendless introverts. Media outlets portray incels as unemployed and living with parents.

People who identify as incel have psychological disorders or such as depression, autism. Some visitors of incel forums attribute their inability to find a partner to physical or mental illness and others attribute it to extreme introversion. Incels engage in self-diagnosis of mental health issues and often discourage posters who post about mental illness from seeing therapists or otherwise seeking treatment.

Rape culture is a sociological concept for a setting in which rape is normalized due to societal attitudes about sexuality and gender. Rape culture is commonly associated with slut shaming and victim blaming and sexual objectification. Pornographic media is often attributed with showing aggressive behaviors and attitudes, supporting violence against women.

Rape culture has been described as detrimental to both women and men (“Rape culture”, 2020). Rape is intrinsically linked to gender roles that limit male self-expression and cause psychological torture to men. Like when women emerge from their homebound roles and go to the workplace and other areas traditionally dominated by men and therefore increasing male insecurities this result in the male to use rape to suppress women. Rape culture is linked to environmental insecurities, where men see women as part of their struggle to control their immediate environment. It is also linked to gender segregation where it is used to prove male masculinity.
