A synthesis paragraph on the theme of “mindfulness and anxiety in students” does not begin with “Smith (2019) found that mindfulness reduced anxiety.” It begins with the finding and brings multiple authors in to support, qualify, or challenge it: “Across multiple randomised controlled trials conducted at U.S. universities, mindfulness-based stress reduction programmes have consistently reduced self-reported anxiety scores among undergraduates (Smith, 2019; Johnson & Lee, 2021; Park et al., 2022), although the magnitude of this effect varies significantly with programme duration and delivery format (Brown, 2020).”

That is synthesis. The idea leads. The authors support. Notice also the qualifying clause at the end: “although the magnitude of this effect varies significantly.” That clause is doing critical analytical work. It acknowledges nuance and prevents the paragraph from feeling like uncritical cheerleading for one finding. Good literature reviews surface disagreements, contradictions, and limitations — not to undermine the field, but to show exactly where your research can contribute. Identifying and Articulating the Research Gap

The research gap is the most important thing your literature review must deliver. It is the logical destination of everything that comes before it. A research gap is not simply “no one has studied this.” That is rarely true, and claiming it usually just means you have not searched thoroughly enough.
