What is the halo effect?+
The halo effect is the tendency for a single positive trait, most commonly physical attractiveness, to create an unwarranted assumption that a person also possesses other positive traits such as competence or honesty. It has been documented in hiring, teaching evaluations, and courtroom judgments, and its opposite, the horn effect, spreads a single negative trait across the entire impression in the same way.
How does culture affect social perception?+
Culture shapes both what information people attend to and how they explain behavior. Individualist cultures, common in the U.S. and UK, show a stronger fundamental attribution error and a more analytic, person-focused perceptual style. Collectivist cultures show more context-sensitive, holistic perception and give greater weight to situational explanations for behavior. Basic emotional expressions are recognized across cultures, but the display rules governing how and when emotion is shown vary significantly.
What is implicit bias and how is it measured?+
Implicit bias refers to attitudes or stereotypes that influence judgment and behavior outside conscious awareness or intent. It is most commonly measured using the Implicit Association Test, which records the speed with which people associate social categories with positive or negative concepts. Because implicit bias operates below conscious control, it can produce discriminatory outcomes even in individuals who sincerely reject prejudice at a conscious level.
